Judan Judo of Toledo History
|
Judan Judo was formed on July 8th, 1991, at the request of the mayor of Toledo,
after several gang related shootings. The program was a way to get the kids of
Toledo off the streets and away from gangs and drugs. The program was
designed for only 45 people. However, on the first day of sign-ups we had 87 kids
register.
We were promised full funding by the city of Toledo to purchase mats, gi and pay
for memberships. That funding never materialized. Therefore, the three senior
coaches funded the cost from their own pockets, until they obtained funding from
Ohio Citizens Bank, to operate for the first couple of years. They started the
program on discarded wrestling mats from the closed Macomber High School.
Since that time we have received a few grants and donations from several small
groups.
We were the 27th largest Judo club in the United States in 1992. Presently we are
the 17th largest club in the United States with 280 members. We have designed
several new beginner classes to help us continue growing.
In 1994 we received the JC Penny award for volunteering work done with the
youth. In the summer of 1998 we brought the United States Judo Association
(USJA) Jr. National Tournament to Toledo. We had 751 competitors and their
families at this tournament, which boosted the economy of Toledo. Also in 1998
we were selected as the youth group to represent Toledo in the All America City
Award. We sent about 25 people to Alabama as delegates for this award, which
Toledo ended up winning.
Because of the success of our program LMHA and HUD gave us a building to
use for our dojo in 1999.
In June of 2000 we brought a USJA Sr. National Tournament to Toledo. We
expected 500 – 700 competitors and their families for this tournament. And in
July of 2001 we brought back the Jr. National Tournament to Toledo.
